Graduation, Prom, Reunion – May be Party Time!

Posted on: June 23rd, 2014 by Personal Insurance No Comments

‘Tis the season! The prom dresses are out at our house. The graduation ceremonies are all scheduled. Now I am getting lots of questions about “the parties”.

At our house we have actually opted out of the “parties” and are planning a family trip. I thought that was a wonderful way to avoid these parties. Some in our house are grumbling about a missed party but the majority are excited about our out of house adventure.

Many of our friends and our childrens’ friends are graciously hosting all sorts of parties in celebration of these spring time events. I wish them all well and as their insurance agent I also have the following thoughts on house parties!

Before the big event, if this party is at your home, check in with your insurance agent on your Social Host liability insurance coverage.

I hear you! Social Host What? Here is a legal definition of Social Host.

The term “social host” means anyone who hosts a social gathering, including private individuals, employers, and organizations. Such hosts may be liable for injuries suffered by their guests and third parties who are harmed by serving alcohol to a guest to whom alcohol is served as an act of hospitality or social courtesy.

So if you are hosting an event the question then becomes will your home or business insurance provide you liability coverage IF an individual is harmed by the serving of alcohol at your home or business?

First off, it is very important to note that not ALL policies are the same! If you are going to host a “party” and serve alcohol, we recommend that you check with your insurance agent regarding your social host liability coverage on your policy. This coverage does VARY by policy.

There are also “interesting” state laws regarding under age minors and social host liability. In some cases parents were held liable for damages even when they were not at home at the time of the party!

We at Herlihy Insurance Group wish you many fun filled and safe celebrations!

Herlihy Insurance Group Agency News

Friday our agency had our year end business meeting. Since our corporate year ends 5/31/14, we always look forward to our June luncheon and business meeting.

First we would like to sincerely thank all of our staff members, clients and other business partners for another successful year. This year our agency is especially proud to have hit our agency growth goals. We were fortunate to have a focused staff that diligently worked together to achieve our goals.

As we were presenting our year end achievements our staff members surprised us with a beautiful memorial plaque celebrating the life of Jay Herlihy. This weekend we installed the plaque by our flag pole at the front of the agency.

As Jay would say, “They are good eggs.” Many thanks to all for remembering Jay with this tribute.

It is a good day to be a member of the Herlihy Insurance Group.

Has your family’s insurance kept up with your family’s use of social networks?

As we head into the summer months where my kids typically have more down time, I started to think about how much computer time they may rack up.

According to, 98% of my kids friends use social media and they spend on average one to two hours a day on some type of social media. From what I can see, that is a low ball estimate!

Many of the social media sites they frequent provide them with a “voice” to all sorts of audiences. They join conversations with people from varied back grounds and experiences.

There are lots of positive thoughts and ideas shared in many of these interactions. In general during the past five years there has also been an increase of “libel and slander” allegations as the result of some online conversations.

As an insurance agent, we want our clients to know that there is a risk of being successfully sued for posting or tweeting a comment that causes another to take legal action.

If you or your family members are joining conversations online be sure to add Personal Injury coverage to your home and umbrella policies.

Insurance coverage for Personal Injury will provide you with some protection for “libel, slander or defamation of character”. The cost to add this coverage is minimal. ($25-$50)

Knowing that my kids will be around with extra time this summer I am making sure this is included in my home insurance and personal umbrella coverage.

And I must admit. There is a HUGE part of me that hopes for no WIFI when we actually do go “on vacation” this summer!
