The Aftermath of Hurricane Lee
We are relieved that Hurricane Lee was a pretty much a no show in Massachusetts this past weekend, but we really do want all of our clients to check on the insurance coverage options they have selected for any properties.
The disaster in Leominster reminds us of how damaging mother nature can be. Increased storm severity and outdated sewer/drainage systems have resulted in devastating damage. Most people will look towards their insurance policies to pay for the damages. Depending on the coverages you bought, your policy may or may not respond.
Flood Damage
Flood damage is excluded on all property policies. Most people only buy flood insurance if they are in a flood zone or required by their mortgagee. Depending on where your business is or where you live, you may want to buy a flood policy even if it’s not required.
Sewer or Drain Back Up
Most commercial policies will provide some coverage for water damage due to back up of sewers or drains. Know your limit and request increased coverage if you need it.
Recently I met with a client about his flood policy. He no longer has a bank, so it’s not a required coverage. He decided to cancel his flood policy knowing that his largest loss would be about $25,000.
Everyone’s situation is different, so let’s have a conversation so you can make the best decision for you and your business. Contact us today to discuss your business or homeowners exposure to flood or other water claims.
