Carvana – Cars and “7 Day Risk Free Returns” and No Coverage?

There is no question that we all appreciate a stream lining of the car purchasing experience.
We love to save time and money.  Carvana.com company out of Arizona is a newer company that our clients have been reviewing for car purchases.   Since this company is operating with its home base out of Arizona, the company is not always aware of the insurance and registration requirements when a Massachusetts resident buys a car.
The Massachusetts car insurance policy is not the same type of personal auto policy that is used in the other 49 states.  Unfortunately what other states do for potential car buyers is not some thing we can do in Massachusetts.
 
Here are a few things that we think our clients should check while working with online out of state car sellers :
  • If you have a Massachusetts personal car insurance policy your agent can not stamp your registry paper work unless the car seller  (Carvana) has assigned the title over to the insured.  The stamping of the registry work means we are ordering insurance coverage on this vehicle.
  • If you have a vehicle that is currently registered you may not attach the plates from that old car unless you have lost possession of this car and you have the title for the new vehicle.
  • Although it has been reported that Carvana allows the customer to “Test Drive” a car for a week, attaching a plate another insured plate would not be a proper registration of this vehicle. If Carvana wants to provide a 7 day test drive then they need to provide the Massachusetts buyer with a valid registration and valid insurance.
So, yes we are all for excellent car deals and convenience.  We do want to assist our clients with their new car purchases within the parameters of the Massachusetts insurance and registration regulations. If you or someone you know is buying a car online, check in with your agency about how the registration and insurance process work before you sign for your new car!
